Family Sponsorship

Family Sponsorship

Many Canadian citizens and permanent residents have loved ones abroad that they wish they could bring to Canada. A person who holds Permanent Residency (PR) or Citizenship of Canada may apply under various family sponsorship programs.

The Canadian government offers a number of ways to allow this dream to become a reality under its Family Class Sponsorship class. Canada’s Family Class Sponsorship programs are some of the most generous family reunification programs in the developed world. After all, the Canadian government is committed to keeping families together whenever possible.

There are a number of relationships that qualify for Family Class Sponsorship, including spouses and common-law partners, parents and grandparents, and dependent children. For parents and grandparents, there is also the Super Visa program.

Although family sponsorship is usually limited to the above-mentioned family members, Canadians could sponsor other family members to Canada under rare circumstances. For example, Canadians may sponsor their minor siblings who have lost both their parents.

In some situations, when the sponsor or their family members are not fully qualified for immigration, an immigration officer could approve the application under the Humanitarian and Compassionate Considerations (H&C). In such cases, a child’s emotional, social, cultural and physical welfare is the immigration officers’ top priority.

Sometimes Canadian provinces introduce special family reunification opportunities for residents of their own province.
